High quality lossless zoom thanks to the 200 MP image sensor. Samsung speaks of a great future.
Get used to it, the resolution of additional smartphone cameras will continue to increase. Recently, Xiaomi announced that the new Redmi mid-range (Note 13 Pro+) will feature a 200 MP main camera with lossless 4x zoom. Now Samsung is opening Pandora’s box.
The company’s own blog says: “Ultra-high-resolution 200 MP telephoto camera: the next big thing in smartphone photography.” That’s not exactly saved. Because Zoom has been given a key role. “Looking ahead, the telephoto camera has emerged as a key factor in improving smartphone camera specifications.”
Zoom has become very important for the smartphone industry
Not only distortion, background blur is also a reason why telephoto cameras are used not only for distant objects, but also for portraits. However, the problem is that telephoto cameras are technically very limited and don’t necessarily provide the image quality that users are used to from main cameras.
Samsung and other smartphone brands are increasingly trying to close this gap. For Samsung, the solution is a 200 MP image sensor, which works for a typical wide-angle camera on the one hand, but also for a lossless 4x zoom. In this case telesensor is no longer needed, Samsung wrote and shows examples.
But it is also conceivable that a 200 MP image sensor with a telephoto lens will be installed. “For example, lossless zoom scenarios from 3x to 6x to 12x can be performed on a 3x telephoto module with a 200MP sensor. This impressive capability means that more diverse scenes can be captured without loss of resolution.”
The main 200 MP camera will be able to zoom up to 4x losslessly, while the other 200 MP camera with telephoto lens can go much deeper. Samsung wants to be able to provide compatible image sensors with the HP2 and HP3 for a long time, and we will soon see corresponding camera setups from different manufacturers.
Samsung probably won’t rely on this solution, but Xiaomi and Vivo will.
