I have been using the Galaxy S23 Ultra since its release and it has served me very well. It’s a great device with a lot of power and more camera features than I could have imagined. While I was initially attracted to this year’s Galaxy S24 Ultra, I couldn’t really justify the upgrade for my personal use case, so I thought it best to sit back and see if the Galaxy Z Fold 6 piqued my interest.
In recent years I’ve been switching between the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy S Ultra models I don’t necessarily plan to commit to a series. I decided to look at each model individually and weigh it up for my use case and only bought the model that ticked all the boxes for me. This time the latest foldable smartphone wins the round, so I have already pre-ordered my Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Screen brightness
The Galaxy S23 Ultra’s display was amazing when it launched and I loved every minute of using it. While I agree that its successor has significantly increased brightness, little has changed beyond that and I felt an upgrade wasn’t necessary if I wanted to stick with the same form factor.
My decision to pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 6 is based on the fact that its 7.6-inch internal display reaches a peak brightness of 2,600 nits in HDR mode compared to 1,750 nits on the Galaxy S23 Ultra. This is a significant increase that will make a big difference when using the phone outdoors on sunny days. And a larger screen area is always a welcome change.
Fast on-board storage
At first glance, both the Galaxy S23 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold 6 appear to have the same LPDDR5X onboard memory. Like most people, I bought the standard version of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which has 8GB of RAM. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 comes with 12GB of RAM as standard, so that’s a nice little upgrade, but that’s not all.
It has a higher frequency speed of 4800MHz compared to the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 4200MHz. While this may seem like a small difference, a higher RAM frequency means the memory can process more data per second, resulting in a noticeable increase in performance. Since I tend to get the most performance out of my main machine due to the nature of my work, this upgrade is worth the upgrade cost to me.
Colorful embossed finish
Last but not least, perhaps the biggest reason I decided to switch was not performance, but looks. I find the handcrafted black color offered for the new foldable phone incredibly attractive. This is an exclusive online offer and you can get it only if you pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 6 from Samsung.
Unlike anything we’ve seen before on a Samsung foldable phone. It gives the device a carbon fiber look and you have to agree with me that black on black is a great look. I find the usual color options a bit boring, but the black color is not boring at all and worth opening my wallet for.
Finally, one of the key reasons to upgrade is that Samsung is offering an $800 trade-in price for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The opportunity to trade in a phone at such a good price after using it for over a year and a half was too good an offer to pass up. Samsung is only offering these high trade-in values for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 until pre-orders are up. It’s best to pre-order yours before July 24th so you get the most bang for your buck.
