There is no doubt that 8K is a buzzword that is here to stay, and IP video technologies are already in place to transport compressed 8K video streams from 12G sources with ultra low latency.
We’ve reported before on the development of JPEG XS which is a central technology in a new pilot project between Fraunhofer IIS and Japanese public broadcaster NHK to deliver 8K video from acquisition to distribution encoder entirely over Ethernet.
Broadcast Quality Compressed 8K IP Video with JPEG XS
A JPEG XS SDK was developed by the video coding expert team of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen in order to integrate JPEG XS in broadcast and post production workflows. This allows high quality images to be transmitted in studio quality via IP for production and post production processes. The SDK supports CPU and GPU processing.
The pilot set up by Fraunhofer IIS comprised a real time encoder with four 12G SDI inputs and 10G Ethernet output, and a real time decoder with a 10G Ethernet input and four 12G SDI outputs. Both encoder and decoder are PC based, and the transmission was sent via 10G Ethernet as a SMPTE 2110 stream. Synchronization was achieved over PTP IEE1588 (Precision Time Protocol).
This project verified the image fidelity and quality at various compression ratios. Full technical details, results and evaluation will be presented at the virtual SMPTE ATC conference in November.
