In the latest issue of the Power-On newsletter, Mark Gurman speculates about the upcoming Mac Mini model. Accordingly, Apple is currently testing a version that uses the new M3 chip. The current Mac Mini uses the manufacturer’s M2 chip.
Apple is currently rumored to introduce the first devices with the M3 chip in October. The processor should be used in the next iMac generation, among other things, and subsequent MacBooks should also come with the chip. A release this year seems unlikely, though, since the Mac Mini was only relaunched earlier this year.
Apparently Apple is currently testing a related computer so that a 8-core CPU with 10-core GPU are used. Additionally, the Mac appears to have 24 GB of RAM available, using Sonoma 14.1 as the operating system. The podcast also shows that all Macs should transition to a new chip in a timely manner. Only Mac Studio and Mac Pro won’t be getting an upgrade in the near future.
According to information from Bloomberg, the Apple M3 is manufactured using the latest 3nm process, possibly at TSMC. Like the M2, there should be four high-performance cores and four efficiency cores. A modified 10-core GPU should be used for this. More significant upgrades are likely for the Pro and Max models, as more cores are expected here. For example, the M3 Max should have 14 cores instead of 12 and a graphics unit with 40 cores. The M3 Pro will likely offer 14 cores and an 18-core GPU. However, these chips shouldn’t be presented as part of WWDC until mid-2024.
