If Google uses an under-display camera for Pixel phones, it will likely be a special one.
Google has already reduced the sensors on the front of its Android smartphones after the Pixel 4, but at some point nothing else should be seen. Some manufacturers have been experimenting with an “invisible” front camera for years, and Google also has the idea for Pixel phones.
Now a patent has surfaced that comes from Google and wants to put the front camera behind the display. So far, these cameras have had visible flaws in terms of quality, but Google plans to do better with the new concept. Two sensors must be used, which can better compensate for light absorption.
Google wants to install multiple cameras under the display
There are special patterns between the display and the camera to fully optimize light intake to achieve the highest possible quality. Each sensor should be suitable for different tasks. Sensor 1 can be responsible for sharpness, while sensor 2 takes care of color reproduction.
According to the patent, it is also planned that the screen above these area sensors will use different pixel layouts to further optimize light transmission for each image sensor. In the best case, it is not at all or barely visible to the user.
Regardless, it sounds like an exciting solution that will certainly be expensive. Additionally, including such patents (via Forbes) is never clear whether they will be implemented in practice. Nevertheless, all manufacturers are trying to be able to offer a real full-screen experience in the future, so suitable solutions must be found.
I believe that the under-display camera will only become a common standard when companies like Apple have a solution for their devices and offer it as a standard for their bestsellers in the mass market. But it may still take some time.
