SIGMA just announced a new lens designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras with Sony E-Mount or Leica L-Mount. The SIGMA 105mm f/2.8 DG DN MACRO is the first macro lens in the SIGMA Art mirrorless lineup and it features 1:1 magnification, weatherproof design, an assignable button, and precise AF operation.
There are quite a few full-frame macro lenses on the market that feature a mid-telephoto focal length around 100mm and an aperture of f/2.8 – almost every lens manufacturer has such a lens in the portfolio. Let’s take a short look at this new offering from SIGMA and how it positions itself on the market.
SIGMA 105mm f/2.8 DG DN MACRO Lens
The lens was designed specifically for full-frame mirrorless cameras, so it only comes in two versions – for Sony E-Mount and Leica L-Mount (no information about the Canon RF Mount, SIGMA haven’t released any lenses for that mount yet). With the 105mm focal length it provides 23.3° angle of view. The minimum focusing distance is 29.5cm (11.6″) and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:1.
The 9-blade rounded diaphragm allows the aperture to be anywhere between f/2.8 and f/22 and should provide rounded bokeh in out-of-focus areas. It is the first macro lens for mirrorless cameras in the SIGMA Art line – therefore, as SIGMA states, the image quality should match the quality known from other SIGMA Art lenses.
The lens construction consists of 17 elements in 12 groups, with 1 SLD lens. According to SIGMA, the lens’ aberration correction places a particular focus on longitudinal chromatic aberration which cannot be handled by the in-camera aberration correction. The lens should also minimize flare and ghosting.
The SIGMA 105mm MACRO lens incorporates a Hyper-Sonic Motor (HSM) in its focus motor system to achieve precise and quiet AF operation. It has been optimized for face/eye detection AF.
On its body, the lens features a focus limiter setting and the assignable AFL button (only supported with certain camera bodies). The aperture ring has a setting to turn the clicking operation ON or OFF. It also comes with a switch for a ring lock system.
The SIGMA 105mm f/2.8 DG DN MACRO lens features a dust- and splash-proof design and it has a 62mm front filter thread. The weight of the lens is 715g (25.2oz), its diameter is 74mm (2.9″) and its length is 133.6mm (5.3″).
Furthermore, when equipped with the SIGMA TC-1411 (1.4x) or TC-2011 (2.0x) teleconverters for L-Mount lenses, it allows users to shoot macro at even higher macro magnifications while keeping the working distance.
Price and Availability
The new SIGMA 105mm f/2.8 DG DN MACRO lens can now be preordered. The shipping should start on October 23, 2020. The price has been set to $799. As usual with SIGMA, the lens comes with a case and sun hood.
