The Pixel Tensor roadmap is emerging for the next few years, and Samsung is once again a key component.
Some information has already been established long ago that we will only get our hands on the Pixel 9. Days before the Pixel 8 launch, more details about the Pixel 9 and Tensor G4 are leaking. Insiders are confident that this is likely the last Google processor based on Exynos made by Samsung.
The new Tensor G4, which Google is already preparing in the background, is said to have Cortex X4, A720 and A520 cores. Same layout, but everything is a bit newer than the Tensor G3, which will be unveiled alongside the Pixel 8 on October 4, 2023. Manufacturing likely takes place on Samsung’s 4LPP+ process, which is also used for the Exynos 2400 (found in the Galaxy S24).
The Tensor G4 is a warm-up G3, with big changes to come
As far as the GPU is concerned, there should be no difference between Tensor G3 and G4. Google will rely on ARM’s Immortalis-G715 this year and next. This is a flagship GPU with “ray tracing”, but a new generation will theoretically be available already. You might want to save a few euros here. Google rarely uses very recent hardware.
As already announced in the past few days, the Tensor G5 will be built by TSMC from the Pixel 10 and will be Google’s first real custom chipset. Angelich has yet to implement the switch to TSMC in 2024 for various reasons. It also reportedly has planned production volumes, which are likely too small for the Pixel 9 series.
The next few years will be like this:
- Tensor G3 (Samsung): Pixel 8, 8a, Fold 2 (?)
- Tensor G4 (Samsung): Pixel 9, 9a, Fold 3 (?)
- Tensor G5 (Custom, TSMC): Pixel 10…
