Digital return has built a reputation over the years by publishing many unique and interesting indie titles According to the company, subscription services viz Xbox Game Pass y PlayStation Plus They “underestimate” the quality of the included titles, leading publishers to reject many potential deals.
Shared by industry analyst MauroNL, as part of the financial report Digital return In the first half of 2023, the publisher discussed its “current business outlook” and revealed that it had apparently turned down several potential deals with game pass / PlayStation Plussays:
“After strong growth in subscription deals in 2021 and 2022, we expect the trend of declining subscription deal revenue to continue in 2024. We expect to continue to reject subscription deal offers that underestimate the value and scope of revenue from the title in 2023. and 2024.”
Discussions around gaming subscription services have been controversial, with some developers claiming it’s beneficial to both studios and their titles, while others suggest the opposite. It seems that Digital return is in the last group.
Like subscription services PlayStation Plus y Xbox Game Pass They’re still in their relative infancy, so it’ll be interesting to see how they evolve over the next few years and whether more studios will follow suit by rejecting these types of deals.
