Check for Updates: button on Google Pixel.
The previously tight schedule for new Pixel updates is a thing of the past, but it’s good for users.
Google recently had a very clear schedule for the new Pixel update. The first Monday of a new month has a security update and, if necessary, various improvements. The so-called Pixel feature drops come in December, March and June. A new Android version will arrive in August or September. But now everything will be a little different.
Google decided to stop adhering to a strict schedule for very good reasons. There has been a lot of chaos in the last few months. Monthly updates have been delayed, Android 14 arrived a month later, and Pixel feature drops in October are also unusual.
Google recently had to delay various updates to the Pixel and decided against early rollouts. This is a good thing, because no one wants unfinished updates on their device. You probably remember the Pixel 6 series, which recently received a completely buggy update.
Google now wants to stand for better updates
in the future want Pixel users will now only be provided with the “highest quality and best tested updates”. As a result, “security updates, bug fixes, and feature updates” will no longer be released on a specific day each month. Instead, only when the “required tests” are actually done.
Google certainly still wants to maintain the same rhythm as before, but doesn’t want to force it so much anymore. For those of us who have gotten used to a schedule, it’s obviously a bit of an adjustment. However, I don’t think Google will intentionally delay updates in the future.
It is currently unclear whether this applies only to the Pixel 8 series. But in my opinion it doesn’t really make sense to proceed differently with older devices.
