Independent game studio Hilltop Studios, in collaboration with Versus Evil, has released the third developer diary video for their upcoming narrative-driven deduction adventure game Lil’ Guardsman. In this latest video, titled “Guard Work Is Hard Work,” Hilltop Studios developers, including co-founder and game director Artyom Komarov, co-founder and creative director Scott Christian, and writer and game designer Matt Barnard, “give insight” into various tools and tricks of the Trade” when it comes to protecting the state that Lil calls home.
“Guard Work Is Hard Work” offers a glimpse into the Guardsman’s toolkit – the player will use intimidation and detection tools to determine whether or not to let a visitor into the Sprawl, state at the center of “Lil’ Guardsman.” Tools include “bad-cop”-like tools such as whips and From truth serum to “good-cop” gadgets like a decryption ring and a metal detector. One of the “Lil’ Guardsmen’s chief joys is using the wrong tools on the wrong people to wreak mischief. Since Lil’ Guardsman has a time rewind feature, players are invited to get creative and discover a variety of fun accidents. There is also a star rating system that offers different levels of engagement for players who want to advance the story versus those determined to achieve perfect scores, results and bonuses.
Expected to be released later this year for PC, Switch, PlayStation and Xbox series consoles, Lil’ Guardsman is a deductive narrative game inspired by the classic point-and-click genre and the mechanics of Papers, Please. Set in a high fantasy world with the whimsical sensibilities of “Monkey Island” and Lucasart’s other ’90s adventure classics, “Lil’ Guardsman” puts players in the role of a young girl who suddenly finds herself faced with… father, head castle guard, to enter What could be the possible mistakes? As you interrogate a cast of strange characters trying to break into the city walls, you must discover each visitor’s true intentions through witty conversation and deft use of your investigative tools. As Lil, you must make tough decisions and decide who should be allowed to enter her castle. The consequences can be dire, so you must skillfully use your skills to uncover mass conspiracies and protect Lille’s castle and her family from dastardly invaders.
