The latest high-end GPU for notebooks is AMD’s Radeon RX 7900M. It is based on the Navi 31 GPU and was first used in the new Alienware m18. According to AMD, the graphics card even outperforms Nvidia’s RTX 4080 Mobile in games.
With the Radeon RX 7900M, AMD is expanding its current mobile GPU lineup with a top model. Entry-level models RX 7600M/S and RX 7700S were released earlier in the year, but mid-range models are still missing. The RX 7900M uses and is based on the RDNA-3 architecture Graphics unit Navi 31, which is also on the desktop models RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX. Due to notebook power and cooling limitations, mobile GPUs have relatively fewer compute units and lower clock speeds.
Power consumption in excess of 200 watts is possible
According to the manufacturer, there are 72 compute units, 64 MB of Infinity cache and 16 GB GDDR6 memory with 256-bit interfaces. The gaming clock should reach 1,825 MHz, the boost clock should reach 2,090 MHz. The graphics card can handle up to 180 watts, but with AMD SmartShift a maximum of 25 watts can be added if the cooling is strong enough.
In AMD gaming benchmarks, the manufacturer sees the Radeon RX 7900M outperform Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4080 by an average of seven percent for notebooks. However, the Radeon GPU performs 5 to 15 percent worse, mainly when ray tracing is enabled. On the other spectrum of performance charts, however, it beats the RTX 4080 in Cyberpunk 2077 by 38 percent. It was tested WQHD resolution (1440p) with highest graphics settings.
However, the footnotes show that AMD tested with an Alienware m18 with a Ryzen 9 7945HX and 32 GB of DDR5 RAM, while an Aorus notebook with an Intel Core i7-13700H and 16 GB of DDR5 was used to compare the RTX 4080.
The first notebook costs at least $2,800
new Alienware m18 First gaming notebook with RX 7800M. Previously, the 18-inch notebook was only available with Nvidia GPUs. There is currently no pricing or availability information for Germany; In the US, the Alienware m18 with RX 7900M costs at least $2,800. GPU power consumption in this case is given as 160 watts and up to 200 watts (SmartShift).
