After the Pixel 8 Pro did well in DXOmark camera tests, the Pixel 8 wants to be able to keep up.
Google has introduced two new camera smartphones in the market and apart from the software, it has also made some improvements in the image sensors. Even if not a huge leap, the new Pixel 8 (Pro) integrates a slightly new image sensor from Samsung. This seems to have an effect on the results.
I think the cameras on the two new Google smartphones are pretty good, but not great. This is evident with the Pixel 8, the cheaper of the two new models currently ranked 9th in the DXOMARK ranking and one point ahead of the Pixel 7 Pro from last year.
However, it is significantly more points ahead of its predecessor. So Google was able to gain a lead over last year, which may not justify a direct change, but certainly warrants an upgrade from a slightly older smartphone.
Testers liked it:
- Beautiful skin tones in photos and videos
- Wide dynamic range in photos and videos
- good soil
- Fast autofocus
- Effective video stabilization
It wasn’t so good:
- Slight underexposure at times
- Occasional noise stuttering in consecutive shots, as well as in low-light and backlight conditions, in photos and videos
- Loss of detail at medium and long telephoto zoom ranges
