In recent years, unions have taken a greater role in industries that have demonstrated consistent opposition to these organizations. Not only have we seen this in video games, multiple entertainment companies have done everything possible to give their employees a better work life and It was recently revealed that the animators Disney Finally they were able to become part of a union.
It was revealed last Wednesday that 63 employees at Walt Disney Animation Studios, including production coordinators, production managers and production supervisors, were laid off. The Animation Guild voted to join the union in the National Labor Relations Board’s vote recount. Out of a total of 68 voters, five workers voted against.
In a statement last Thursday, Animation Guild union organizer Alison Smart commented:
“As the first production staff at an animation studio to integrate with TAG, the Disney production staff is a shining example of extraordinary teamwork, patience, strength and courage in the face of the company’s delayed strategy. “They watched the vote count and celebrated and took a moment to celebrate this victory and draw strength from each other as they prepare for the next leg of this journey: landing a solid deal.”
For her part, Maggie Hughes, production coordinator, noted:
“This victory exemplifies the essence of why we unite. “We knew throughout this process that everyone in our unit deserved to be qualified, but the company still decided to continue this long and difficult process in an attempt to divide us.”
In March this year, the workers expressed their desire to unite Disney voluntarily declined their request to recognize the group. But their organizing campaign began a year earlier, in the winter of 2022, when the group sought to change wages and portable health care they could take with them to various jobs.
