The showdown between Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and OnePlus 12 will be the first big smartphone battle of 2024. We’ll get our first real look at the OnePlus 12 on December 5, when OnePlus will launch its latest flagship in China. Global figures will be released in early 2024 – likely around the same time Samsung launches its latest Galaxy S phones.
The OnePlus 12 will get a more powerful chipset, improved cameras and a brighter display to turn heads. And while we don’t know the price yet, the OnePlus phone appears to be significantly cheaper than the Galaxy S24 Ultra, giving smartphone buyers a cheap flagship option among the best Android phones.
The S24 Ultra tops Samsung’s lineup of new phones that we expect to see on January 17. When the Galaxy S24 Ultra launches, it is expected to bring numerous AI-powered features along with camera improvements. This is how the battle between Galaxy S24 Ultra and OnePlus 12 goes.

Galaxy S24 and OnePlus 12: Price
We currently don’t know how much both the phones will cost, but it’s pretty clear that the OnePlus 12 will be the cheaper of the two devices. You only have to look at the price difference between the previous models to conclude that not much is likely to change this time around.
The OnePlus 11 starts at $699, $100 less than Samsung’s entry-level Galaxy S23. (You can get the Galaxy S23 FE for less, but that phone runs on an older chipset and makes other compromises for its reduced price.) As Samsung’s premium phone, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, on the other hand, starts at $1,199. In other words, we’re looking at a $500 difference between the two phones.
It’s hard to say whether that gap will remain the same this year — the OnePlus 12 offers some premium features that could lead to a price hike, for example. But despite the new phone’s starting price, we expect the OnePlus 12 to cost a few hundred dollars less than the Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Galaxy S24 Ultra und OnePlus 12: Design and display
If you’ve seen the current OnePlus 11 and Galaxy S23 Ultra models, you have a good idea of what the new versions of these phones will look like. OnePlus has already revealed the design of the OnePlus 12 and it is very similar to its predecessor, except for the return of the alert slider, which was missing from the last two models. Samsung’s design is still unofficial, but leaked images show essentially the same shape as last year, with a less curved screen.
Whether a design is successful or not usually depends on personal taste. Some people will love the distinctive circular camera array on the back of the OnePlus 12, while others will be drawn to the minimalist look of the Galaxy S24 Ultra, with its camera lenses stacked vertically and integrated into the back of the phone.
We expect the Galaxy S24 Ultra to follow in the footsteps of its predecessor and offer IP68 water resistance, meaning the phone can survive underwater. We’re still waiting to see what water resistance the OnePlus 12 offers. On the OnePlus 11, it was IP64 that protected the phone from splashes, but little else.
As for the screen, it looks like the OnePlus 12 phone will get a slight increase in size to 6.8 inches. This means the panel will be the same size as the Galaxy S24 Ultra. OnePlus promises a very bright display – 4,500 nits. It will definitely outperform the Galaxy S24 Ultra as it was rumored to max out at 2,500 nits.
Galaxy S24 Ultra and OnePlus 12: Camera
The cameras are a big battleground between the OnePlus 12 and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, especially considering the Galaxy S23 Ultra is currently our pick for the best overall camera phone. Samsung will reportedly look to improve this standard with upgrades to the main camera sensor and telephoto lens.
One rumor in particular suggests that Samsung will use a 1-inch sensor for the S24 Ultra’s main camera, a move that should help capture more light for brighter photos overall. As for the telephoto lens, it looks like one of the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 10-megapixel telephoto lenses will be replaced by a 50-megapixel lens with 5x optical zoom. While the current phone doesn’t support 10x zoom, the higher resolution can result in sharper shots.
We already know the camera specifications of the OnePlus 12 as they have been confirmed by OnePlus. The new phone has a 50-megapixel main camera along with a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 64-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. OnePlus’ partnership with lens specialist Hasselblad continues on the OnePlus 12, so we see further improvements in color calibration and image brightness.
Galaxy S24 Ultra and OnePlus 12: Performance
Don’t expect much difference in speed and processing power between OnePlus 12 and Samsung Galaxy S24. OnePlus has confirmed that its new flagship will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 system-on-chip that Qualcomm introduced in October, and all signs follow the Galaxy S24 Ultra. (Other Galaxy S24 models may have an Exynos 2400 chipset instead, depending on which part of the world it’s released in. However, Samsung is expected to exclusively use Qualcomm processors in the Ultra.)
The OnePlus 11 and Galaxy S23 Ultra have the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset – although the Samsung version has been optimized for better performance – and benchmark results were essentially the same. If history repeats itself with the OnePlus 12, it looks to give OnePlus an advantage. Not only do you get the same performance for less money, you get to enjoy a phone with up to 24GB of RAM. (Meanwhile, rumors of a jump to 16GB of RAM for the Galaxy S24 Ultra have been debunked by a prominent leaker.)
Samsung could find other ways to highlight its performance. The company has already announced plans to make AI the focus of its phones, and the S24 range’s numbers suggest it will be the first to benefit from the move. Potential features Samsung has announced for its Galaxy AI initiative include on-device translation, generative text support that can help you write emails, summarizing web pages and image creation tools.
OnePlus 12 rumors didn’t have much to say about the AI-powered features of this phone. So the Samsung Galaxy s24 Ultra and the OnePlus 12 could be on the right side of a big feature gap.
Galaxy S24 Ultra and OnePlus 12: Battery life and charging
The OnePlus 11 and Galaxy S23 Ultra differ in terms of battery life, with both phones making our list of best battery life. In our battery test, it should last at least 12 hours, a remarkable performance that the OnePlus 11 (13 hours, 10 minutes) and Galaxy S23 Ultra (12 hours, 22 minutes) can easily manage.
We expect similar results from the OnePlus 12 and Galaxy S24 Ultra, just based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s improved power management. Battery improvements are also rumored for both phones – a larger capacity battery in the case of the OnePlus 12 and a new stacked battery in the Galaxy S24 Ultra that is denser to pack more power into the same space.
What you should focus on is the loading speed. The OnePlus 11’s 80W wired charging doubles the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 45W charging speed. (It’s faster outside the US, where different voltage standards allow the OnePlus 11 to offer 100W charging speeds.) Rumors suggest that the OnePlus 12 will have similar charging speeds. , although an earlier rumor said the S24 Ultra would reach 65W charging speeds. off
OnePlus has confirmed that the OnePlus 12 will also offer wireless charging, a feature missing from the OnePlus 11. OnePlus is also rumored to offer faster wireless charging speeds. For comparison: the Galaxy S23 Ultra can be charged wirelessly at 15W.
Galaxy S24 Ultra and OnePlus 12: Predictions
Despite everything we know about the detailed rumors about the OnePlus 12 and Galaxy S24 Ultra, it’s still too early to say which phone will come out on top in the head-to-head comparison. The final verdict between OnePlus 12 and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra can only be made after both phones are launched, tested and reviewed, which should happen in early 2024.
However, based on what we know so far, some patterns have emerged. The OnePlus 12 seems to be trying to offer some premium features in an affordable device, while Samsung is all set to push the boundaries again with its camera and AI features. Whether buyers will opt for the cheaper OnePlus device or the more feature-rich S24 Ultra depends on how each phone maker delivers on its promises.
