Samsung plans to roll out delayed satellite features to Android devices starting in 2024.
The last few weeks of 2023 mean we’re inching closer and closer to new Samsung devices. Samsung will also bring OneUI 6.1 later in the year, which will have some new features on board. For example, the satellite function that we in the Android world actually expected for 2023 and Android 14.
Samsung is currently testing the new OneUI 6.1 already Internally on your own device, a public test version for the Galaxy S23 series should launch soon after the end of the year. It has already emerged today that there will be at least one emergency SMS function that will work via satellite and therefore independent of mobile communications.
You don’t have to sit somewhere deep in the forest for this kind of event. A natural disaster such as a fire or flood can be enough to bring down mobile phone networks. In recent times, these emergency functions will be very practical to work through satellites.
I think Samsung is rolling out the new satellite features on the Galaxy S24 series first. Perhaps only on the Galaxy S24 Ultra as well, but that remains to be seen. Recently, an important agreement between several companies failed, due to which the satellite functions in the Android world have been delayed until at least 2024.
