There should be details on battery health again for the Pixel series, but probably only for the newer models.
Google recently announced the return of an improved battery display for Android devices and confirmed the new Pixel 8a. The battery indicator redesign in Android 14 essentially introduced features that give users detailed information about their battery’s health, including charge cycles and manufacture date. However, these features surprisingly disappeared with the March 2024 update for older Pixel devices.
google hat no Clearly explains why this particular battery indicator feature has been removed on older models and will only be available on the Pixel 8a and later models. It is possible that this is due to hardware-related limitations, where newer devices have improved sensors or other technological features that allow for more accurate or reliable data collection. Another possibility could be that Google uses these features as an exclusive incentive to encourage users to upgrade to newer models.
The decision to remove the battery indicator and then re-enable it exclusively for newer models may cause confusion and frustration for some users. Features that provide insight into battery health and performance are important to users, especially at a time when smartphone longevity and durability are increasingly focused on. Google is already years behind in this regard.
Regardless, it can now be expected that the Pixel 8a software will finally introduce the Enhanced Battery Display, which provides more information about battery health on Pixel devices. We’ll know more when the new Pixel 8a smartphone launches in Germany in May 2024.
