I see a lot of Phil bashing in today’s Xbox ads. I understand. But knowing him as a person, I know it hurts him as much as it hurts anyone else. I can’t speak for all the leaders out there, but I know him and I know what he’s probably going through.
I am not trying to defend the decision. I think we all get into difficult and unexpected situations (I certainly have). It is part of the job, as is responsibility for results. But he’s a good person and cares deeply about the creative process and developers. This is my first experience working closely with him for over 8 years and knowing him for over 24 years.
I 100% understand the anger and confusion and am deeply sorry for the parties affected today and over the past few months. I don’t agree with every decision he’s made on Xbox, and I think that’s been pretty obvious, but I trust his product leadership and I know how difficult those decisions can be.
Xbox may have a very bright future. I hope you can figure it out and have an amazing experience all together. It’s definitely a tough time that needs great clarity on what the future plans are and how the world’s players can get excited.
On the other hand, there are some content creators who are calling for a kind of boycott, where they want the experience of not paying anymore game pass At the same time, a plan that doesn’t really make sense, but is ultimately understood as a supposed protest against the event.
