What Sony is presenting with the Xperia VI is well-intentioned, but still very much of the past.
Sony is moving a little closer to normal with its new Xperia 1 VI, as we’ll notice when we look at the specs. But the Japanese still make mistakes that put them behind their competition. At least: no price increase, the new top model starts at 1,399 euros.
As already known, the new Xperia 1 VI is no longer that long. It is 3mm short, but 3mm wide. The installed screen now has an adequate resolution of FHD+ instead of 4K, but shines with significantly higher brightness (1.5x brighter). The focal length of the zoom camera has been improved, so we now end up at 170mm (yielding 7.1x zoom). Telemacro recording is also possible.
Sony has only improved battery life with the new display, but the 5,000 mAh battery capacity remains. There is a major update for the camera app, the latest high-end chip installed with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. 256 GB (UFS 4) is included as standard, as well as 12 GB of RAM, a microSD slot and jack connection.
Dark black bars at the top and bottom of the display create a rather dated look. Nothing has changed with the update guarantee, we are talking 3 years for new operating system versions. The competition in this price range, Google and Samsung, offer 7 years. A world of difference.
Honestly? Sony gets some points right, but misses big changes and ends up delivering what was already available in recent years. A smartphone for enthusiasts who prefer to use a memory card instead of the cloud and still want wired headphones We are not surprised that we are losing more customers than gaining them.
