This year’s COD, which is still under wraps, will be titled Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, according to newspaper ads fans spotted this morning.
Copies of USA Today were photographed and included a promotional insert for this year’s upcoming shooter, featuring the game’s logo and title, as well as a collection of in-universe news.
Fictional news reports detail the defacement of Mount Rushmore, as shown in last night’s Call of Duty Black Ops 6 teaser.
“Famous bosses blindfolded for shameless act,” read the Universe headline. The story explains how an unknown group climbed the American landmark at night and hung signs reading “True Lies”. The perpetrators are considered either “anti-government extremists” or “anarchist impostors”.

Other headlines concern the failure of the American Dream (which is now “out of reach of the average citizen living in the United States”) and the upcoming US election, which is said to be dividing society.
“As the cycle accelerates, it seems clear that key votes will take place in a handful of key battleground states that will determine which political puppet is tasked with stalling the nation’s legislative efforts over the next four years.”
“As divisions deepen and trust in political leaders erodes, American families must navigate an increasingly polarized, uncertain landscape. As the cycle of empty platitudes continues, the fabric of American society strains under the weight of disillusionment and division.”
To be clear: all of this is supposed to take place in the universe. I guess.
Meanwhile, an editorial discussed a “culture war” in which Reason and Reason were “pronounced dead at the scene after being mortally wounded in the crossfire.” The article continues: “Attempts have been made to revive critical thinking and common sense through the use of facts and appeals to common humanity, but the efforts have proven unsuccessful in the face of a relentless onslaught of divisive narratives and entrenched prejudices.”
Definitely in-universe, yes.
While all of this points to a more modern setting, it has already been reported that Black Ops 6 will feature the Gulf War. In fact, some expected the game’s title to be related to Black Ops: Cold War and the conflict to appear in the title.
The fact that he doesn’t make his position more ambiguous may help increase his appeal. It’s also interesting that the title doesn’t use Roman numerals for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 – officially Black Ops IIII.
(And yes, Eurogamer’s Christian Donlan actually went to the British Museum to find out the truth about why IIII was used as the standard Roman numeral substitute for four – IV.)
Microsoft will reveal Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 in full at its showcase event in June, spending a full hour detailing the game. We are still waiting to see the gameplay and of course to find out the release date. We’re also waiting to hear details on how Black Ops 6 will be revealed on Xbox Game Pass – perhaps via a new, more expensive tier.
