It’s a disastrous morning for Bungie and the Destiny 2 community as the massive expansion The Final Shape launches next Tuesday. It leaked early.
Exactly what happened is still being clarified, but it appears to be an issue with Sony PS5 streaming as the DLC was briefly made available through that service. It has now been bombed with nuclear weapons, but the damage is already done. (This article contains no spoilers.)
The leak allowed some players to start the campaign, but what was more pressing was seeing a lot of information in the group system, causing story spoilers to spread online, which would no doubt soon be posted in their threads, live stream chats, etc. . There are conflicting reports about how players can access the game. These range from first cutscenes to reports of full playthroughs (unconfirmed).
Part of the leaked collection appears to be tweaks to raids that could take on the highest-grossing raid race in Destiny history, as if you were doing it. no Learning about these leaks will immediately put you at a disadvantage compared to those who have seen them, no matter how obscure they may seem in the moment.
This is without a doubt one of the worst leaks and bugs I’ve ever seen and it seems to be entirely Sony’s fault as it’s the only platform this has happened to and it’s related to their streaming feature. Whether this will happen in the right technical way remains to be seen, but it’s a problem Sony needs to address immediately so it doesn’t happen elsewhere. There are currently other unconfirmed reports that this makes Earthtree’s Elden Rings Shadow playable, but I haven’t seen any confirmation of this, such as the last skin leak.
With so much riding on the release of this expansion, with the culmination of a decade-long saga, it’s hard to overstate how disappointing such a leak is for Bungie.
The community seems to be organizing to prevent the spread of these leaks as much as possible, but the only real solution is to shut down the internet completely until Tuesday, because there are so many ways for these things to pop up. All it takes is one comment, one line of chat to spoil a plot point and I’m here with different games. Stay online and it’s hard to avoid, especially when the leak is this big. And there are many people who have a grudge against Bungie and love to spew such hate.
Terrible. We need to know exactly what happened here and how we can avoid it in the future. But it’s too late for Destiny 2.
Update: Leak confirmed so far (no details):
- First scene and some dialogues
- Collect information including weapons, raid gear, raid mode and knowledge tabs
- Episode 1 Season Pass with existing gear.
