A crazy idea remains a crazy idea, but perhaps today’s technology can implement it better.
Samsung’s experiments with new form factors for smartphones are apparently entering the next round like from a Recently leaked patents According to reports, the South Korean technology group has developed a concept for a foldable smartphone with an additional rotating display.
Documents filed with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) describe a device that at first glance looks like a conventional smartphone. The highlight is in the design of the display: the main screen can be turned sideways by 180 degrees using a rotation mechanism. A second display appears below, which can be used for multitasking tasks, for example, without covering the display on the main screen.
But that’s not all: According to the patent sketch, the main display has an additional hinge so that it can also be folded in the middle. When opened, the device will offer a large, continuous screen area comparable to a compact tablet.
LG’s dual display smartphone: the new wing with all its potential in video
Samsung isn’t the first manufacturer to experiment with a rotating second display – the LG Wing already had the same idea. But the combination with a foldable main display is an innovation and could give the device a unique selling point.
However, the unusual design also raises questions. Designs with two moving components – the hinge and the rotating mechanism – can be a challenge in terms of stability and longevity. It also remains to be seen how practical this design actually is in everyday life. After all, testers at the time weren’t entirely impressed with the LG Wing.
It remains to be seen if and when Samsung will bring such a device to market. The company, which is one of the pioneers in the field of foldable smartphones, routinely files patents for innovative ideas without converting them into series products on time.
