Apart from the yesterday’s LUMIX S5 announcement, Panasonic also teased new LUMIX S-series L-Mount lenses that will be coming soon. The 85mm f/1.8 prime lens will come in November 2020. The others – 24mm, 35mm, 50mm f/1.8, and 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 – will follow in the near future.
Yesterday, Panasonic announced their new compact-sized full-frame mirrorless camera, the LUMIX S5. Make sure to check our extensive coverage of this camera, if you haven’t already – Review with Sample Footage, Interview with Panasonic’s Yosuke Yamane-san, and Release Article with all the Specs.
In their LUMIX S5 launch video on YouTube, Panasonic has additionally mentioned new L-mount lenses, which are planned to come in the near future. The new L-Mount prime lenses from Panasonic are supposed to feature a compact size to go well with the new compact-sized mirrorless full-frame camera, the LUMIX S5.
New L-Mount Lenses Coming Soon
Panasonic plans to start with the 85mm f/1.8 full-frame prime lens. The company states that this lens should be available in November 2020. When taking a look at the official lens roadmap on the Panasonic website, the 85mm is the only one that is already there.
Regarding the further full-frame lenses – 24mm f/1.8, 35mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8, and 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 – there is no release date yet. Panasonic only says that these lenses will be coming in the “near future”.
I suppose that these lenses will represent a lighter and more affordable alternative to Panasonic’s own LUMIX S 50mm f/1.4 and SIGMA Art L-Mount prime lenses, which have the same focal lengths. There is, however, no word about the price of these new lenses, yet. I am curious to see if these new lenses will be suitable for manual focus, and if they will feature an electronic “fly-by-wire” focus ring.
