Since winning the 2020 election, President-Elect Joe Biden has called for unity and an end to bipartisanship that has deeply divided the country. This week he took to social media from his official account (@JoeBiden) to make his case.
He tweeted, “I believe America is strongest when we work with our allies. It’s how we keep this country safe, counter terrorism and extremism, control this pandemic, deal with the climate crisis, and so much more.”
Such sentiments have been shared by many of his supporters including his close personal friend, actress Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano) who took it even further, “I’d like to extend an olive branch to Trump supporters.
I am ready to move #ForwardTogether.
There’s so much work to do to heal the nation. Let’s be a part of the solution and not add to the problems we face. My comments are open. Please reply with #ForwardTogether.”
Ms. Milano’s comments were immediately questioned, especially with many noting that she had spent the last four years acting like a sore loser and was only being “gracious” because Biden won the election.
Jon Hollis (@hollis4congress), who had been a Republican candidate for California’s 28th Congressional District seat, responded, “You want to extend an olive branch to the 74,000,000 plus people you have demeaned, patronized, attacked, lied about, falsely called racist, etc. That’s like being shot and then the criminal comes back and says ‘Hey, we can still be friends, right?’ Your [sic] delusion knows no end!”
@mislaneco offered a similar sentiment, “I remember you. You were the one glaring at Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his hearings. You were the one that called conservatives every name in the book and didn’t sensor [sic] your words in the least. No way you’d be offering an olive branch had your party lost … How about NO.”
@RayvnnLiberty added, “You wouldn’t be saying this if Biden lost. The only reason why you want to move ‘#ForwardTogether’ is because your team is in power and the opposing team has to essentially bend to your will.”
Additionally, many Biden supporters also rejected the notion of #ForwardTogether. This included @taurusangel25 who took a harsh tone, NO – I’m done extending the olive branch first. It’s THEIR turn – THEY need to show genuine remorse and regret and give a genuine apology before I will even consider it. I will not extend my hand to the Proud Boys, to those who laughed as Trumpers tried to run a Biden bus”
@anthonyvclark20 also took the hard line to Milano’s call for unity, “Glad you can extend an olive branch, but I have no olives or branches for racists & bigots. There can be no unity with those who want to see people that are different marginalized & oppressed
honestly anyone a true ally would demand they change not accept who they are”
Long Critical Of Trump
The Charmed alum has long been a vocal critic of President Trump and Republicans in general, so her call for unity on social media seems disingenuous – especially as she has been so vocal on the platform. It was literally just weeks ago that the actress tweeted, “America or Trump. You can’t love both. #BidenWon”
There is also some irony that the actress has named her podcast “Sorry Not Sorry,” which is part of her bold statement that she won’t apologize to those who disagree with her. It could make her calls for “#ForwardTogether” sound hollow.
Conservative political commentator Joel Pollak, who currently serves as senior-editor-at-large for Breitbart News offered perhaps the most grounded response, tweeting, “I approach liberal friends/relatives with whom I have disagreed to mend fences *BEFORE* the election. You don’t get to declare this just because ‘your side’ won. If you want reconciliation, and you didn’t do it before Nov. 3, begin with an apology. We deserve it. #ForwardTogether”
