TL; DR
- In Q4 2021, Apple was number one in the United States, followed by Samsung.
- Motorola ranks third, while Alcatel and OnePlus are in the top five.
- OnePlus has achieved 520% annual growth in this region.
Apple and Samsung are the perennial top performers in the U.S. smartphone market, and a Q4 2021 report reaffirmed this and also shows that other players have made great strides.
His post on Counterpoint Research Q4 2021 US Report Today, Apple appears to have a 57% market share, while Samsung’s market share topped 24% in the first quarter. The tracking firm noted that Apple grew 17% quarterly (we also asked about annual growth), while Samsung grew 11% year-over-year.
The company noted that demand for the iPhone exceeded supply, adding that Samsung also faced shortages (especially when it comes to the Galaxy S21 series). Counterpoint says that the Galaxy A12 was the best-selling Android phone of 2021 – it is not clear whether this is only in the US or worldwide, although we speculate that it is earlier.
The rest of the US market
There is also good news for Motorola, coming in third with 9% market share Counterpoint says the brand has sold the most phones in the United States in its history (first losing its previous high of 4 in 2019). It is believed that LG’s departure and a strong portfolio of affordable phones have contributed to Motorola’s success. The tracking firm added that the Moto G Pure (its first MediaTek phone in the country) was in the top three for quarterly sales.
Alcatel (2%) and OnePlus (2%) are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively. In fact, Counterpoint reports that the OnePlus quarter achieved 524% year-on-year growth, pointing to the success of Nord Line in T-Mobile and T-Mobile’s partnership with Walmart.
We noticed earlier that many new brands in a market often see indicative growth because they start from a low base (such as Xiaomi after the first few years in Europe). But it’s still good news for OnePlus, especially since the brand debuted in the US in 2018. The increase comes after the firm changed its strategy and focused on mid-range and budget phones, suggesting that the new strategy is working in the region.
Google was the final name brand on the list, came in sixth and accounted for 1% of the U.S. market in the quarter. The tracking firm says that Google actually achieved a 56% YoY increase because of the Pixel 6 series. It must be said that Google saw a shortage of Pixel 6 series right after its launch, suggesting that it could possibly have performed better.
