Hellblazers (2022)
Tubi — January 21
Tubi, one of the top free streaming services, isn’t well known for its originals. It does produce and distribute some titles exclusively, though. A recent pick worth checking out is Hellblazers, an action horror indie with big names like Bruce Dern, Billy Zane, Tony Todd, and Adrienne Barbeau.
A mysterious cult summons a demon in a small southwestern town, and soon the townsfolk have to contend with hell on earth and the people trying to usher it in. Check out this schlocky little genre film if you want some gruesome fun.

Watch Moore in 1989 as he takes on General Motors. The local economy of Flint, Michigan, was devastated when GM CEO Roger Smith elected to close several auto plants. Moore tries to seek the businessman out and confront him about the decision, all the while offering a portrait of his own hometown and its people.

Malignant (2021)

Boris Karloff: The Man Behind the Monster (2021)
Shudder — January 27
Boris Karloff has had an iconic presence in cinema history, though you may not immediately recognize him. His biggest role had him ambling around in heavy makeup and prosthetics as Frankenstein’s monster in 1931’s Frankenstein, and its many sequels.
This documentary traces his 60-year career, offering insights and insider knowledge. It includes interviews with industry-heavyweights like Guillermo del Toro, Roger Corman, and many others.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

Devil in a Blue Dress (1995)
Paramount Plus and Hulu — January 1
It’s a mystery why no one has tried to adapt Walter Mosley’s best-selling Easy Rawlins mystery novels since 1995’s Devil in a Blue Dress. With terrific performances by Denzel Washington, Jennifer Beals, Don Cheadle, and more, the film stands as proof that Mosley’s writing works incredibly well onscreen.
When Easy Rawlins, recently laid off and strapped for cash, is enlisted to help find a missing woman in 1940s LA, he gets mixed up in a criminal underworld of crooked politicians, racist cops, and violent kidnappers.
Hulu
Hulu offers not only thousands of movies and TV shows to stream, it also has original shows and films like The Handmaid’s Tale. You can upgrade to Hulu Plus Live TV to get live channels, including your local stations.
Three Days of the Condor (1975)

Gamer (2009)
Peacock — January 1
A critical and commercial failure, 2009’s Gamer is way overdue to be rediscovered and given its well-deserved appreciation. Now’s a perfect time, as the sci-fi actioner from the directors of Crank has dropped on Peacock, where you can watch it for free (or without ads if you sign up for a paid subscription).
The film follows John “Kable” Tillman, a man on death row fighting for his freedom as a human avatar in a massively popular online game where inmates can win their freedom — or die trying. The film is a totally unhinged and hyperactive look at our online lives and where we might end up if we let tech billionaires have their way.
Peacock
NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service offers a lot of great movies and TV shows to stream on demand, along with live news and sports. Best of all, you can watch lots of its content for free, or watch all of it with a paid subscription starting at just $4.99 a month.
Scream (1996)
Peacock — January 1
This is a perfect time to revisit horror classic Scream, just as the latest entry in the iconic franchise is hitting theatres. Re-launching the slasher genre in the 90s, Wes Craven’s Scream is both a loving homage and a blast of energy into a genre losing some of its luster in the public eye.
It follows teen Sidney Prescott and her friends trying to evade the mysterious Ghostface killer. The twist is that the characters (killers and victims alike) are hyperaware of the rules of horror films, using them to wink to the audience and scrounge up some fresh scares. If you like Scream, you can also check out Scream 2 on Peacock.
Super Troopers (2001)
Amazon Prime Video — January 1
A comedy classic that’s sure to get you laughing, Super Troopers is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The film follows a group of Vermont state troopers with a knack for slacking off, pranking, and hazing each other and generally doing a terrible job of policing.
They have to get serious — or as close as they can get — when a jurisdiction war puts them at odds with rival law enforcement. If they can get it together to solve a murder tied to a marijuana smuggling operation on their own, they’ll be able to prove themselves and keep their beloved station open.
Amazon Prime Video

Directed by Academy Award-winner George Clooney and starring fellow Oscar winner Ben Affleck, The Tender Bar is a coming-of-age drama based on J. R. Moehringer’s memoir of the same name.
It sees a young J. R. growing up on Long Island with his eccentric family. Coping with the disappointment of an absentee father, he forms a bond with his supportive — if unconventional — uncle Charlie and the patrons of the bar he runs.
Pharma Bro (2021)
Hulu — January 7
Remember Martin Shkreli, the most hated man in America who raised the price of AIDS medication by 5,500% overnight and became known as the “pharma bro”? Documentary filmmaker Brent Hodge sure does, and he set out to understand the bizarre public figure by doing something a little weird himself. He moved into Shkreli’s apartment building to get close to and document the man.
Hodge is no stranger to larger-than-life characters, having made his mark with a documentary on Bronies, the adult male superfans of My Little Pony. Here, he looks to a darker figure. But is Martin Shkreli the problem or a symptom of the problem? That’s what Pharma Bro asks us to consider.
I’m Your Man (2021)
Hulu — January 11
A German scientist has the chance to get research funds for her studies, but there’s a catch in this offbeat sci-fi rom-com. Alma must first participate in an odd experiment that will see her living with a humanoid robot for three weeks. Tom’s artificial intelligence allows him to be Alma’s ideal life partner. He is designed to make her — her specifically — perfectly happy. I’m Your Man is one of the best new streaming movies to check out on Hulu.
Eternals (2021)
Disney Plus — January 12
The Eternals have lived among us for thousands of years. A race of superpowered beings designed to ensure the continuation of the god-like Celestials, they watch over Earth, protecting it from a race of aliens known as Deviants. As characters within the MCU, though, they are forbidden from otherwise interfering in human affairs, explaining their absence from major battles involving the Avengers and the fate of the world.
The ten heroes are now questioning their place in the world and facing new threats to humanity and their core purpose. Chloé Zhao directs this ambitious entry in the MCU, which you can now stream on Disney Plus.

The Last Duel (2021)
HBO Max — January 14
Among 2021’s best films, Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel is available to stream on HBO Max. Shot from a screenplay by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon, The Last Duel tells the story of a years-long feud between former friends, a knight, and a squire in 14th-century France. Their petty rivalry reaches a breaking point when the knight’s wife accuses the squire of raping her.
The story is told, in turn, from the three characters’ perspectives, revealing the ways men twist reality to fit their needs and stroke their egos. At the same time, women’s experiences are weaponized in service to everything but justice.
Hotel Transylvania: Transformania (2022)
Amazon Prime Video — January 14
Fans of the Hotel Transylvania films may be sad that this one won’t hit theaters, but the latest film is already available on Amazon Prime Video. In this latest title, Van Helsing’s “Monsterification Ray” goes wrong, turning Drac and his monster friends human, while Johnny, in turn, becomes a monster. Now, they have to work together, adjusting to their new mismatched bodies, to find a cure before it’s too late.
The Tragedy of Macbeth (2022)
Apple TV Plus — January 14
Something wicked this way comes. Joel Coen (of the Coen brothers) directs this brand new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy, Macbeth, available on Apple TV Plus. With haunting performances by Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand as Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, respectively, this one already has lots of awards buzz and is not to be missed by fans of the Bard.
Apple TV Plus
Apple TV Plus has quickly become a major player in the streaming game since its launch in 2019. Its slate of original programming includes shows like Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Foundation, and For All Mankind as well as movies like The Banker, Greyhound, and Palmer.
Marjorie Prime (2017)
Hulu — January 15
When 86-year-old Marjorie begins exhibiting signs of Alzheimer’s, her family seeks an odd new treatment. It’s the near-future, in which artificial intelligence is a way of life. Enter Prime, a new companion for Marjorie. Prime is a handsome and likable man, and he looks exactly like Marjorie’s deceased husband. Rather than let her forget, he reminds her of her own life with him — or the man he’s programmed to be.
This indie sci-fi drama was a big hit on the festival circuit. Based on the celebrated novel by Jordan Harrison and directed by Michael Almereyda, Marjorie Prime is one of the best new streaming movies to check out.
Twilight (2008)
Peacock — January 16
Love it or hate it, Twilight was a massive phenomenon when it came out in 2008, and it got more than a bit of undeserved scorn at the time. Doesn’t entertainment aimed at teen girls always get dunked on a little harder? Looking back, there’s a lot to admire in this teen vampire love story, and it may even be one of the best new streaming movies to check out on Peacock.
Catherine Hardwicke’s direction is sharp and original, telling the story of Bella Swan, who finds herself falling for her mysterious, brooding classmate Edward Cullen. But is there more to Edward than meets the eye?
Phantom Thread (2017)
Netflix — January 16
A renowned dressmaker has his strictly regimented lifestyle upended when a young woman enters his life in 1950s London. Alma, a strong-willed but less fussy woman, grows fond of Reynolds Woodcock, becoming his muse and lover despite marked differences between the two.
Nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, Phantom Thread is one of Paul Thomas Anderson’s best films, with a stunning original score by Jonny Greenwood.
Injustice (2021)
HBO Max — January 17
Based on the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game from NetherRealm Studios and the graphic novel Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year One by Tom Taylor, Injustice is an adult animated film set in the DC universe.
In a dark alternate universe, Superman has gone mad, convinced by the Joker to kill Lois Lane. But Batman has other plans and assembles a team of heroes to take down the Man of Steel before he can take over Earth and rule with an iron (or steel) fist.
The Murder of Fred Hampton (1971)
HBO Max — January 17
This 1971 documentary explores the murder of Fred Hampton, the leader of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, by the Chicago police. It thoughtfully breaks down the investigation into the tragic, racist targeting of Hampton, illustrating his legacy as a champion of racial justice.
You can also currently watch Judas and the Black Messiah on HBO Max, a narrative feature about Hampton’s betrayal by an FBI informant. Both films are moving and intelligent explorations of racial injustice in America and are among the best movies to stream this week.
The Last Thing Mary Saw (2022)
January 20 — Shudder
Mary, raised in a repressive, religious household in 1800s New York State, takes comfort in her relationship with the family maid. Her family, believing they are acting according to God’s will, seeks to punish the girl severely for a relationship they view as an abomination. Things are further complicated by a mysterious stranger’s arrival, a suspicious death, and unexplained forces at work.
Edoardo Vitaletti makes his feature-length directorial debut with this haunting horror film starring Rory Culkin, Stefanie Scott, and Isabelle Fuhrman.
