The Covid-19 coronavirus has been invading the US and much of the world since 2020. The Russian military has been invading the country of Ukraine since last week. So what is the so-called “People’s Convoy” of truckers choosing to fight against this weekend in the state of Maryland? The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)? Nope. Russian President Vladimir Putin? Nope. How about precautions designed to protect people from Covid-19?
Yep. A press release from the “People’s Convoy”Is claiming that“ it’s time for elected officials to work with the blue collar and white-collar workers of America and restore accountability and liberty – by lifting all mandates and ending the state of emergency – as COVID is well-in-hand now, and Americans need to get back to work in a free and unrestricted manner. ” Gee, who knew that something that’s caused an average of over 50,000 new reported Covid-19 cases and over 1,500 Covid-19-related deaths per day over the past seven days could be considered “well-in-hand now?”
Similar to the so-called “Freedom Convoy” that disrupted traffic in Ottawa, Canada, for three weeks starting in late January, this “People’s Convoy” is a procession of trucks and other vehicles that’s trying to get attention while tossing around the word ” freedom. ” So if you are in the Washington, DC-area this weekend, be prepared for this “People’s Convoy” to impede your “freedom” to drive at normal speeds and not listen to honking horns. On Saturday, this convoy has already been backing up traffic, as you can see in the video in the tweets below:
In the tweet above, author Molly Jong-Fast asked, “I don’t understand what they are protesting.” After all, in the US, schools have been open. Businesses have been open. No one has been trying to forcibly take over control of the US and government and its people. OK, no one has been trying to forcibly take over control of the US and government and its people in a year. Twitterer @uru_ashtar contrasted what’s happening in Ukraine, where the Ukrainian people are fighting for their freedom against Russian invaders, with what’s happening with the “People’s Convoy.”
hasuru_ashtar used the hashtag # TruckersConvoy2022, which was trending on Saturday. A number of tweets with the hashtag pointed out the stark contrast between the Ukrainian people and the “Freedom Convoy”, the “People’s Convoy”, or whatever you want to call the procession of vehicles that’s now clogging up traffic in Maryland:
Others tried to zero in on what specifically the so-called “People’s Convoy” was calling loss of freedom:
One thing for sure, this “People’s Convoy” will turn out to be quite a gas, meaning that it’s going to end up consuming a lot of gasoline:
A big question is whether the “People’s Convoy” was really the best use of fuel and vehicles at this time. Some on the Twittersphere pointed out what vehicles were being used to do in other countries. For example, here was a “peace” of what was happening in Germany:
And vehicles and drivers could certainly be helping deliver supplies:
Ultimately, it’s unclear exactly how many people are actually participating and supporting this “People’s Convoy.” The following tweet was probably an underestimate though:
The press release listed Pierre Kory, MD, and the doctors of the Frontline Covid-19 Critical Care Alliance (FLCCC), as supporters of the “People’s Convoy.” Kory and the FLCCC have spent much of the pandemic pushing Covid-19 prevention and treatment measure such as ivermectin that are not supported by adequate scientific evidence. The release also listed “liberty-minded lawyers such as Tom Renz and Joey Gilbert [Gubernatorial candidate – Nevada]”And” Pastors like Rob McCoy and Rick Brown of Godspeak Church. “
Ultimately, any claims that Covid-19 precautions are preventing freedom and liberty pale in comparison to what’s happening to the people in Ukraine. Trying to draw attention away from the growing humanitarian and public health crisis in Ukraine is basically “Putin” the wrong priorities first.
