The Acer Chromebook Spin 714 is the older brother of the Chromebook Spin 514. Packed up to a 14-inch screen and a 12th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, this laptop has some great features. However, I hope Acer can solve some of the problems I encountered during my early days with the device.

Introduction
The Acer Chromebook Spin 714 is designed for technology lovers and hybrid workers, featuring next-generation Intel processors and great screens.
The Acer Chromebook Spin 714 has joined the Chromebook Spin 514 as the latest entry in the laptop’s spin lineup. Acer claims that the laptop is designed for hybrid staff and students, suggesting that it prioritizes productivity over intensive work pressure.
It is important to note that this laptop is pre-production, which means that the unit I tested may not perform as well as the models published to customers. This means that any issues or problems that I have experienced are not a direct reflection of the final product, although it does give us an indication of the design and appearance of the final models.
Also, since I’ve only spent a day with the Acer Chromebook Spin 714, this article will focus on a hands-on and only machine design and space, which means we won’t run out of battery or performance.
Pricing
The Acer Chromebook Spin 714 will retail at a starting price of 799.99 and will be available for purchase in the UK in the third quarter of the year. We will update this article after we know the specific launch date as well as pricing for both America and Europe.
Design and screen
- The chassis flexes in a lot
- Build quality leaves something to be desired
- The trackpad seems slow
I really liked the keyboard on this laptop; It was responsive and I was able to work on it for a few hours without any problems, although it suffers from the same problem as the Chromebook Spin 514, as the chassis is much more flexible to my liking.
The very top of the keyboard can bend it quite severely, and you can usually push down most parts of the keyboard and bend it inwards without using too much force. While I don’t think it has greatly affected the overall build quality, it does make me more cautious when typing on a powerful laptop like the Huawei Matebook X Pro (2022).
Also, I wasn’t a fan of the touchpad because it didn’t feel overly responsive and a small amount of liquid or oil on my finger seemed to really disrupt the process. I’ve been using it for hours on end, and I’ve struggled with dragging tabs on one side of the screen or in a new window, which made me wish I was using an external mouse instead of a dedicated touchpad.
Touching on the look of the machine, the build is very chunky, which I think is the date of the laptop as a whole. Since there are so many ports – two USB-C, USB 2.0, HDMI and 3.5mm audio jack – I understand the logic of thicker style and it is more convenient for those who will use these ports, but it is not so smooth – Dell XPS 13 OLED (2021) ) As seen.
The Chromebook Spin 714 weighs 1.4 kg, and it was comfortable enough for me to hold in one hand. Although I have never been able to get it out, I believe it will work well as a portable machine, although I would be careful to push it when you get on a bus or on a busy train because the laptop feels a bit weak in some places.
The color of my unit was a silvery gray, which I think looks fine but very simple. Compared to the Acer Spin 5, which comes in a nice sage green color, the silver laptop is not only different and can be easily confused at a glance for countless other laptops, which I hope it would have had a little more personality in the overall design.
The screen
- 14-inch screen
- 360-degree hinge
- Touchscreen
The 14-inch screen has a resolution of 2560 x 1600 and a 16:10 aspect ratio. Starting with what I liked, the brightness was good and the colors seemed crisp and vibrant when I watched Rick and Morty on Netflix. The whites and blacks looked right and there were no blue or yellow undertones, and overall the viewing media looked great on Netflix. The touchscreen was also responsive and worked well with the 360-charm, as the traditional clamshell shape could be converted to a tablet.
Unlike the Spin 5, this model doesn’t come with a stylus, although I’ve enjoyed using my finger to scroll through articles and take small notes. Acer further claims that the screen has 100% sRGB accuracy, although we were unable to test these claims due to time constraints. We will do this when we get the final retail version for review
Thanks to the 16:10 display I could work with several tabs open at the same time, and while browsing the web I encountered only one problem: when YouTube and another tab are open at the same time, the screen is severely torn, when Netflix is on the screen. Despite not going then. This may be due to a pre-production model, although I would be wary if you enjoy watching YouTube on your screen while working.
Performance
- 12th generation Intel processor
- There were some problems when YouTube was open
- Intel Iris Xe Graphics
Since it’s a hands-on, I can’t comment on the performance of the Chromebook Spin 714, but I can see the specs.
This laptop comes in four different flavors: Intel Core i7-1260P, Intel Core i7-1265U, Intel Core i7-1215U and Intel Core i5-1235U. You can get up to 16GB LPDDR4X RAM and up to 512GB storage using Gen 4 SSD.
These specs line up with what I would expect for a productive device although I don’t believe it would be able to perform high-intensity tasks such as 4K video editing or 3D rendering, which means you should only consider the Chromebook Spin 714 if you have a Looking for work or educational device.
Acer also did not mention what the battery of this laptop looks like, but claimed that it can last up to 10 hours. Again, we will examine this claim once we get the final version for review
First impression
The Acer Chromebook Spin 714 seems to be a reasonably priced laptop that will work well for most people who are studying or want to browse the web, send emails and write documents. Aside from the YouTube glitching issue, I liked the screen and I would imagine that these kinds of issues would be ironed out before they were properly published, which means it could also be a great device for binging Netflix.
I also hope that Acer will solve the problem with the flexible chassis, because I think it can stop people from using it as a portable or hybrid device, which is supposed to be the case in its initial use.
