(Pocket-Lint) – Twitter has announced a new policy to prevent misinformation during a crisis.
The platform will block the promotion of tweets if they are seen spreading misinformation.
Inside A blog post Elaborating on the new policy, Joel Roth, head of security and integrity at Twitter, said: “Content restraint is more than just dropping or dropping content.”
“We have expanded the scope of the steps we can take to ensure that the potential damage is commensurate with the severity.”
It is quite common for fraud and other misinformation to go viral in an emergency, as people rush to share information without having time to properly test its credibility.
The new policy states that tweets classified as misinformation will not necessarily be deleted or banned, instead Twitter will add a warning label and users will have to click a button before the post can be displayed. This will work similarly to how clear images are currently hidden on the platform and these posts will be blocked from promotion.
These stricter rules will only apply in times of crisis, initially, Twitter will apply the policy to tweets about the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
