First expansion for Olively World Has landed, and comes with over 70 new customization options to add a huge selection to the already base game.
The VOID Riders are a brand new alien crew who have landed in Radlandia in search of the mysterious Hypod One – a true world skater worthy of a cosmic celebration. Could that skater be you? Will you be able to impress their mysterious leader, Nebulard? And, most importantly – what kind of new fashion is this intergalactic audience bringing to Radlandia ?!
I spoke with Arthur Tubb, the main character artist and animator of developer Roll7, who gave me an inside scoop of new customization options in this DLC, and how all these extroverts fit.
Roll 7: Hey, Arthur! The previous one. Can you tell me a little bit about the process of designing a customization item?
Arthur Tubb: We start by determining how many new items we need, how they are unlocked, and how they fit the description. Then we go crazy and try to design them. I work on all aspects of the process, from conceiving, modeling, texturing, skinning, crafting and setting up prefabs in games.
Roll7: What is a Prefab?
Arthur Tubb: Well, in this context, Prefab is a clothing item and how it fits with the customization system.
Roll 7: So, for example, is there a prefab that is only the size of a basic T-shirt, and then you and the customization team can put different colors and patterns on it?
Arthur Tubb: That’s right!
Roll7: What was your thought process when working on the new ‘VOID’ line? What was the vibe you were aiming for?
Arthur Tubb: In terms of vibes, I always try to bring it back to the existing skate culture… most of the items I’ve actually seen that people wear while skating at any time, be it on the street or in old 80s skate videos!
Roll7: How did you go about capturing feelings outside of this world with these new customization items?
Arthur Tubb: Rainbow Shader probably has their most cosmic feel and wiggly effect on nebular items. Rainbow Shader is a special kind of effect on custom items in the game, creating a kaleidoscope of colors that moves across objects. I can’t take credit for that, it’s for our VFX artists! But I created a board where Griptep is a portal to another level.
Roll7: This DLC also has some new grabs and animations. Which game were you most excited to see and why?
Arthur Tubb: Yes, there are some new ones! I’ve animated the grabs, and our 3D animator Aurelian Duhain has created animation options for your character at the beginning and end of the run. Rocket Air is really great, because I like 80’s vert tricks, but the Cosmic Caveman Start animation is ridiculous. We’ve definitely had fun with these newcomers.
Roll7: There are also some new hairstyles. How does the process of selecting and designing those jobs work?
Arthur Tubb: We’ve received some requests to create more varied hairstyles, and we’re happy to take it on board. Our amazing idea artist German Raina has come up with new hairstyles based on those requests, and then our 3D artist Jeremy Butlett modeled all their squish glory. The hardest part of it is probably creating the mixed shapes, so they fit perfectly under all the hats! A ‘blendshape’ is an effect that transforms an object into another shape, in this context it is the difference between a hairstyle with or without a hat!
Roll7: If you can wear an item Olioli World: VOID Riders In real life, what would you choose and why?
Arthur Tubb: My personal style is quite annoying, I like simple things with an accent color. So, I would choose a black believer t-shirt with a pink print.
Roll7: What is your favorite new customization item for this first expansion and why?
Arthur Tubb: Oh, it’s a tough one, I love them all for different reasons. But the hoodie with hood up is great, gives some new variations and skinning around the neck was fun. The Lagoon Creature outfit is also great, as it has large, oversized feet and a permanently dumb expression.
