Following the news of a major update to the Lightroom software suite, Adobe has also announced a new neural filter for Adobe Photoshop. New AI-powered filters, photo recovery, are designed to automatically remove scratches, marks, dust and other imperfections from old photos and make them look smooth and clean.
Adobe has released a video that is working on a new photo restoration neural filter, which you can see below.
Photoshop has a variety of ways to integrate new filters with other AI-powered technologies, including using content-conscious fillers to fill in the gaps in an image that are missing or too damaged for repair. Using Photoshop, you can repair an old black and white image and then color it with just a few clicks. Simplicity is one of the main features of Photoshop Neural Filters. Currently there Three sections Neural Filters: Featured, Beta and Waiting List. Featured sections are fully published, tested filters that integrate with Adobe. These include Skin Smoothing, Super Zoom, JPEG Artifacts Removal, Colorize and Style Transfer. The second group, beta, is a filter available for anyone to test, but Adobe does not guarantee high-quality output. Photo recovery in this section will appear when it becomes available. Smart Portrait, Harmonization, Landscape Mixer, Depth Blur, Color Transfer, and Makeup Transfer are currently in beta testing.
However, in the video above, which shows a beta version of Photoshop, it is shown that there will be some changes in the way the neural filters are presented, the filters being further categorized by what they do. There will be five categories: Face, Creative, Color, Photography and Recovery. There will be photo restoration filters with JPEG artifacts removal and noise reduction. The latest filter is currently in Photoshop’s ‘waiting list’ group, which means it’s not even available for beta testing. It is not immediately clear if the structure of this new neural filter organization will be available in a public release of Photoshop anytime soon.

In the video, we also see that the photo restoration neural filter has two sliders, one for ‘photo enhancement’ and the other for ‘scratch reduction’. Each slider can be completely disabled. There is also a drop-down menu for ‘Adjustments’, but we don’t see what’s in it.
The new photo restoration neural filter is similar to many previous neural filters in that it is designed to use AI to reduce various pain points in the manual photo editing workflow. You can manually repair old photos using a variety of Photoshop tools such as repair brushes and clone stamps to carefully remove scratches, stains, dust and creases on old photos. You can then manually adjust the color and even color an old photo yourself. However, while impressive and efficient, this process can take a very long time.
