Whether a Pixel smartphone will still officially receive a new Android version as an update depends on Google’s release of the corresponding Android version regarding the update guarantee. Unfortunately, this doesn’t matter when a new Android version begins its testing phase. Probably an issue for the Pixel 4a.
Unfortunately, the beta phase does not play a role in the final update
In recent years, Google has been targeting new Android releases for August or September at the latest. This year with Android 13 it worked again with August. What hasn’t helped the Pixel 3a yet is that the update guarantee for the mid-range Android smartphone ended three months ago.
Pixel 3a misses out on Android 13, Pixel 4a teeters on Android 14
In terms of timing, it would actually fit quite well into Android 13’s testing phase. It started before the update guarantee expired. In any case, the next Android update to version 14 in the coming year is sure to shake up the Pixel 4a. The dates are close and still very close.
Of course, we expect a positive decision from Google that the Pixel 4a will definitely still be part of Android 14. We’ll probably find out by March or April at the latest when the Android 14 beta starts. But I wouldn’t say you can guarantee that from today’s perspective.
Google should finally adjust its update guarantee
To guarantee the number of upcoming Android updates we suggest for some time and not just for a specific time. Of course, it would also be nice if Google eventually extended the warranty to four or even five years/version.
