For modern high-end smartphones, it is no longer just about GPS, but about communication via satellite, which must be integrated into more and more smartphones. Google has already announced that they intend to make these functions generally available with Android 14.
But of course the deployment depends on the smartphone OEMs. Apple has already introduced with the iPhone 14 that messages can be sent via satellite. So there’s basically no place for users that they can’t interact with.
The feature should primarily be useful for emergency calls.
