A significant change seems certain for the Tensor chipset of Pixel devices, but the time is not yet.
There have been similar reports on the matter before, and now the confirmation comes from a very established and well-known industry source. The “information” could tell us that Google is indeed working on processors for future Tensor chipsets that are no longer coming from Samsung. But we still have to be patient, it is becoming increasingly clear.
Google missed its original plan, so 2024 cannot be met. The Tensor G3 is coming in 2023, still based on a Samsung Exynos, and the Tensor G4 is likely to follow. Only with the Tensor G5, which we expect in the Pixel 10 in 2025, will TSMC be responsible for making the processor. Then with the 3nm manufacturing process.
Tensor without Samsung is delayed due to internal issues
TSMC is simply better positioned in manufacturing, the processors manufactured by TSMC are more powerful and efficient. The current Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the best example, the Tensor G2’s differences are huge and the Tensor G3 will probably only come close in small steps. Even Samsung itself does not use its own processor in the top models.
According to one former chip research manager, Google’s delay in bringing a fully custom Tensor to market is due to labor-sharing and coordination difficulties between the US and India, where most of its Tensor silicon engineers are based and high turnover within the group, Google said.
Google is currently slowly replacing Samsung on the Tensor platform and will leave the South Korean manufacturer behind. However, it will be interesting to see where the chip design comes from, if not from Samsung.
