Last week it was announced that 1,900 people were being laid off at Microsoft Gaming, where we include Xbox, Bethesda, Activision Blizzard, and many other studies. Unfortunately, today it came to light Activision Blizzard’s eSports division has taken a strong hitAs many people lost their jobs.
This information first appeared as a rumor, but was eventually confirmed by multiple people working in the area. Scott Parkin, former senior manager of eSports operations at Activision Blizzard, confirmed the news through his official Twitter account and expressed his disappointment:
“They did it, they really did it. They let us work over our heads and fired us on our first day off. The lack of common decency is a joke.”
For its part, The segment’s host, Matt Morello, also confirmed that he had been fired:
“Unfortunately, today, along with so many other amazing people in esports, I have been let go from Blizzard. It was a dream to choose Overwatch and plan some of our best years with Overwatch Esports and next year with the new OWCS. Hopefully I can stay involved in the OW scene in the future, but if anyone wants to talk about product, production and talent work, the email is in my bio <3.
Unfortunately today, along with other amazing esports people, I was let go from Blizzard. Casting Overwatch and planning some of our best years with Overwatch Esports and working behind the scenes and the upcoming year with the new OWCS has been a dream come true.…

for now It is unknown if these new layoffs are part of the 1,900 announced last week, or if it is part of a new wave of layoffs. Regarding the eSports division, sources close to Insider Gaming have indicated that the division will continue to exist, but will be restructured to align with the company’s new plans.
For its part, Neither Activision Blizzard nor Xbox have issued a statement regarding these new layoffs., and they probably won’t. Relatedly, Xbox shuts down its physical games division. Likewise, fans attacked this decision by Xbox.
Editor’s note:
This is a real insult. Worse, the layoffs come just days after a long workday for the department. I hope all workers find a new company that values their work, and not get fired after a series of massive contracts.
