Apple plans to expand its lineup of laptops next year using its newer, faster in-house chips, with a view to capturing a larger share of the market, insiders say.

The company is working on a larger MacBook Air with a 15-inch screen for release early next spring, according to people who said plans should not be identified because they are not public. This will mark the first model of that size in the 14-year history of the MacBook Air. Apple is also developing its smallest new laptop of the year.

The new models, led by Lenovo and HP, underscore Apple’s strategy of using indigenous processors to gain market share. The company began splitting from long-time partner Intel in 2020 and announced its latest chip, the M2, at a developer conference earlier this week. Better performance and new design have helped revive the Mac lineup, accounting for about 10 percent of Apple’s sales.

The 15-inch model is an expanded version of the under-developed 13.6-inch MacBook Air that Apple announced this week. Unveiled at the developers’ event on Monday, the design is thinner than recent models, relying on the M2 chip and abandoning the previous wedge-shaped frame. It is considered to be the biggest overhaul of the MacBook Air since it was launched by Steve Jobs in 2008.

Apple had earlier considered a 15-inch variant for this year’s MacBook Air, but dropped those plans to focus on the 13.6-inch version. Yet, even that model will take time to reach consumers. Despite being unveiled this week, supply-chain constraints will prevent it from selling until July.

Apple has also begun work on a new 12-inch laptop and is considering launching it in late 2023 or early 2024. If Apple goes ahead with the release, it will represent the company’s smallest laptop since shutting down the 12-inch MacBook. In 2019.

A spokesman for California-based Apple Capartino declined to comment on the company’s plans.

Apple debuted its last 12-inch laptop in 2015 with a slim frame, but the device was criticized for keyboard failure and sometimes lazy performance. The new 12-inch laptop is a low-end device or a high-end machine that is part of the MacBook Pro line, which currently comes in 13.3-inch, 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch sizes.

Between 2003 and 2006, Apple also sold a 12-inch version of the PowerBook, the predecessor of the MacBook Pro. And it briefly offered a MacBook Air with an 11.6-inch screen. Apple’s new Mac processors are based on the same architecture as the iPhone and iPad, allowing the company to increase performance inside the slimmer casing.

Apple plans to launch a new high-end MacBook Pro with the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips by the end of 2022, although the release date could slip to early 2023. These new 14-inch and 16-inch models, codenamed J414 and J416, will not be fundamentally new products beyond offering fast chips. Apple is releasing a new 13-inch MacBook Pro next month with the same M2 chip as the MacBook Air.

The next high-end MacBook Pros M2 Max chip will include 12 main processing cores and 38 graphics cores, up from a maximum of 10 processing cores and 32 graphics cores in current models. Apple is testing a newer version of the Mac Mini and a modified Mac Pro, Bloomberg reports. And the company is already working on an M3 chip destined for future iMac and other products.

The move away from the Intel chip has so far been successful for Apple, which has helped significantly increase Mac revenue. The company reported $ 10.4 billion (approximately Rs 80,900 crore) in Mac sales in the second quarter of fiscal year, which is almost double Apple 5.4 billion (approximately Rs 42,000 crore) before Apple’s replacement in the second quarter of 2020.

Apple plans to release a larger version of the iPad Pro next year, according to Bloomberg. The new model will take advantage of the new multitasking capabilities included in the iPadOS 16. And the company is preparing new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros later this year.
