Apple plans to integrate a password manager app directly into the next version of its iPhone and Mac operating systems. mentioned BloombergMark Gorman on Thursday. The new app, called simply Password, will compete with existing password managers like 1Password and LastPass, which typically charge a monthly fee to generate and store unique passwords. Apple plans to unveil the app on June 10 at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference.
Apple already creates and stores unique passwords through iCloud Keychain, a feature that syncs passwords across all Apple devices you own as well as Windows computers via a browser extension. But passwords stored in iCloud Keychain – strangely – make it difficult to find or change those passwords in the Settings app. Integrating a dedicated password app into Apple devices will not only make this easier, but also give people an extra reason to stay in the Apple ecosystem.
Apple’s Password app reportedly divides passwords into different categories, like its competitors’ accounts, Wi-Fi networks, and passkeys (here’s a detailed look at how it works). It also lets you import passwords from competing apps and your device detects when you’re logging into a website or app. Passwords also works on Apple’s $4,000 Vision Pro headset and supports two-factor verification codes, as does Google Authenticator and Authi. It is not yet clear whether the Password app enables secure storage of files and photos in addition to the passwords that both 1Password and LastPass offer.
In addition to Passwords, Apple is expected to unveil the next versions of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, WatchOS and VisionOS on Monday. The new versions of the software are said to come with all-new AI features.
