Gemini is not yet ready to replace Google Assistant on Android. This is what users have been saying over the past few days, and thankfully Google has acknowledged it, as well as Gemini’s “problems that need to be fixed”.
Google immediately listed “Google Assistant features and services not supported on Gemini” in the support document:
- Media service provider: Podcasts, news channels, radio and third-party music providers are currently not supported on Gemini
- the routine: Starting a routine in Gemini is not supported On Android phones, routines associated with alarms and shortcuts to start routines no longer work in the Clock app.
- You can still use Google Assistant to trigger various actions on home devices like speakers and smart displays.
- memories: Return to Google Assistant to set reminders and tasks
- Translator mode: Return to Google Assistant to use interpreter mode.
Google Jack Krakczyk As of Friday afternoon, “Helpful tasks: calendar, reminders and action add-ons” were marked as “things to fix soon”. It looks like Google will add these features through extensions. Google Workspace currently only supports Gmail, Drive and Docs.
“Android app: send conversation overlay input” was also in the list and has already been fixed This rather nifty voice input method in the new overlay panel was basically just voice input where you had to press the send icon to send.
As we noted Thursday, support for English in other countries — Latin America, Africa, Asia Pacific and Canada — will officially begin Monday, alongside Japanese and Korean. The Gemini app will be available “soon” in the UK, Switzerland, European Economic Area countries and related territories
The “we’re working on it” fix list for the app and Gemini Advanced round off:
- Reject = top priority
- Encoding: They all want a translator. ack
- Pretty Gardel: Some funny examples, we’ll fix them
As far as Google is concerned, there are the following positives:
- Writing style
- Creativity that helps you find the right words/ideas
- reaction speed
- Do not exceed the usage limit
- Online communication
- Picture in the answer
- Integration with tools (Gmail, Maps)
Meanwhile, Google insists that Gemini Advanced is free for the first two months. Ultimately, it’s kind of a soft launch for a given tier.
