Atomos and Panasonic will add the LUMIX S5 to the list of cameras that enable ProRes RAW recording onto the Atomos Ninja V. This free firmware update will increase the value of the Ninja V and mirrorless cameras even more.
Atomos and Panasonic have announced that the Panasonic LUMIX S5 (our review here) will be able to output up to 5.9K ProRes RAW to the popular Ninja V recorder today, with the help of a free firmware update.
Available recording options will be:
- 5.9K up to 30p
- 4K up to 60p
- 3.5K Anamorphic (4:3) up to 50p
Atomos Ninja V
Besides the ability to record higher quality video, you will get a better monitoring experience with the larger 5″ 1000nit HDR display. Longer record times with reliable and cost-effective SSDs like the Angelbird AtomX SSDmini might be helpful for some, too.
ProRes RAW
ProRes RAW is proving to be a very efficient and powerful intermediate codec, just like all the other ProRes flavors. The possibility to change certain video parameters in post production, from cameras that cost under $5000 is very welcomed.
Also, the growing NLE and App support (Final Cut Pro X, Adobe Premiere, Grass Valley Edius, Assimilate Scratch, Colorfront, FilmLight Baselight) for ProRes RAW is paving the way to wide-spread adoption.
Availability
The firmware update for the Atomos Ninja V will be available on November 24th and you will also need the corresponding Panasonic LUMIX S5 firmware update, to enable ProRes RAW recording.
