If you’re planning to upgrade next month, it might be worth waiting to see what vendors have to offer: Bloomberg According to reports, they will offer “significant” discounts on the iPhone 15.
The move is expected to counter disappointing smartphone demand in the US amid forecasts of a global smartphone slump that could be the worst in a decade…
Global smartphone market ‘worst in a decade’
The global smartphone market is showing a strong upward trend and it almost seems to be a law of nature that every year the sales are higher than the previous year as new buyers enter the market and people switch to the latest devices.
However, according to data from Counterpoint Research, the market peaked in 2017 and has been on a downward trend ever since (except for a glimmer of hope in 2021).
The pandemic and tough economy have exacerbated the challenges facing the industry, but it also grapples with the simple fact that smartphone technology has plateaued and the average consumer doesn’t see a reason to upgrade for another two years. The average person now upgrades their smartphone every three to four years.
Counterpoint predicts that the global smartphone market will contract again this year, with shipments at their lowest level in a decade.
Even Apple isn’t too optimistic. The company recently reported a year-over-year drop in iPhone sales and said it expects a similar situation this quarter as the iPhone 15 struggles to match or surpass iPhone 14 sales.
Expect big discounts on iPhone 15
Apple itself must adopt its full-price strategy, depending on the brand appeal and glamor of the new models.
but Bloomberg US operators are expected to offer aggressive promotions for the iPhone 15.
“We’ve had record-breaking upgrades across all vendors so far this year,” said Jeff Fieldhack, director of research for Counterpoint North America. “The launch of iPhone 15 is a window for wireless carriers to reach high-value customers. And with the large iPhone 12 install base, promotions will be strong and Apple will be in a good position.”
But getting the deal may take some time. Although some airlines may offer special offers on the first day, the best offers may be booked a bit further in the future due to high initial demand.
