To celebrate Chrome’s 15th anniversary this month, Google announced a Material redesign for the desktop browser on Mac, Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS.
It follows the previous redesign five years ago, which introduced the Google Material Theme. While the overall design remains the same, some corners have been rounded and the top of the browser (tabs, omnibox, and bookmarks bar) has been slightly taller.
Icons have been “updated” to make them easier to read, such as B. how the downward-pointing marker is positioned on buttons, while icons are now shown in full three-dot menus to make it easier to find important settings. Some menus have been rearranged to now have a highly visible submenu for the Google account you’re logged in to
There is no longer a padlock in the address bar thanks to the widespread use of HTTPS and a new icon for accessing site options. These floating menus have been redesigned with rounded corners and pill-shaped buttons.
Chrome continues to improve side panel functionality and now includes “All Bookmarks”. You’ll also find the “Search this page with Google” feature, which opens a window to highlight related images and searches.
Color plays an important role in this redesign, introducing new panels that “better complement tabs and toolbars.” This is best experienced when not using the dark theme. On the New Tab page, click Customize Chrome in the lower right to try it out
Google too Officially announced a material redesign for the Chrome Web Store, including personalized recommendations and adding new categories such as B Editors’ Favorites And AI accessories.
The redesigned Chrome component will roll out “in the coming weeks”, with version 117 stable next week
For security, extensions are covered by an integrity check, and Google Safe Browsing now works in real-time to compare sites against a list of known bad URLs. Your browser used to update a local list every 30 to 60 minutes, but 60% of phishing domains now exist for less than 10 minutes.
By reducing the time between threat detection and blocking, we expect a 25% improvement in protection against malware and phishing threats. This update will be available for Chrome in the coming weeks
