Durability is evident in the new foldables, but some devices are stronger than their competition.
How long does a foldable actually last? A good question, which some colleagues would like to pursue in different ways. And since the two competitors are similar, priced the same and went on sale at roughly the same time, that question is now answered in a lengthy live stream.
The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra (my test here) and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 were constantly opening and closing next to each other. It turned out that the Razr 40 Ultra was completely destroyed after “only” 126,000 folding processes, so the display was no longer usable.
Samsung’s smartphone can withstand more than twofold folding process. Coincidence or not, the Samsung phone was able to prove in this endurance test that it can be more durable. After more than 200,000 folding processes, which Samsung promises, the test was transferred into the water. It survived anyway, even if it made some strange noises.
Although the hinge is actually very similar, Samsung could arguably make a better version. Samsung promises the smartphone to be slightly less sensitive to dust and water. Last, but not least, let’s not forget that humans fold these devices differently than machines. By hand, the stress point will always be slightly different, so the load on the components is always different.
