Google has been planning to reintroduce Face Unlock for regular front-facing cameras for some time. Meanwhile, the Google Pixel launch has been delayed for almost a year.
For the past few months, there was always hope that Google would finally bring the feature to the Pixel 6 Pro. Face Unlock was actually planned for this smartphone, as initially released images may have revealed at the time. But Google changed its mind, delaying the launch for months.
Although Face Unlock has appeared repeatedly in source codes, it didn’t come with any of the three Pixel feature drops (December, March, June) on the Pixel 6 Pro. Meanwhile, we almost gave up hope if it wasn’t for the Pixel 7 series with identical front cameras and the new Android 13.
Face Unlock returns for Google Pixel: Google has been keeping fans waiting for almost a year
The last quest for face unlock wasn’t too long ago. More than a month ago, a hitherto unknown innovation was discovered. It was about a performance boost that activates as soon as you use Face Unlock Which also indicates that Google is not satisfied with the feature so far and wants more improvements.
You’ve given yourself a whole year more time. That’s right because Face Unlock wasn’t among the promises Google made when the Pixel 6 series was launched. Without the internal graphics leak, we certainly wouldn’t have built up so much anticipation. But now that Google should finally deliver, so does the competition.
Face Unlock isn’t entirely new to Google phones. A variant that was still slow and very insecure existed already in the days of the Nexus series. Later came the original biometric solution with additional hardware and the software solution provided till then was superseded.
Would you rather use a 2D face unlock that only works with a simple front camera and software algorithm, so it’s actually less secure?
