Long software support is undoubtedly one of Fairphone’s core competencies. For the update to Android 13, they had to overcome a particular hurdle.
A new update for Fairphone Model 3 and 3+ is now available according to the manufacturer. Users can wait for the latest Android 13 version, which brings many improvements and security updates. The update will be rolled out gradually, so be patient if it’s not available where you are yet.
The Fairphone team jumped straight from Android 12 to Android 13. This is because the chipset manufacturer no longer offers support for Android 12. Therefore, the internal team took up software support.
Support for five years and maybe more
Fairphone aims to support the 3 and 3+ models for at least five years after release with software updates until at least the end of August 2024. Since longevity is one of the most important qualities Fairphone promises, the company is pushing for an additional two years of support, which will bring support up to 2026.
Report some problems
A few issues were reported after the update was released. These include issues with SIM card unlocking and automatic reconnection to WiFi. Fairphone has already responded and promised help from the support team.
Android 13 update for Fairphone 4 is in the works
However, owners of the manufacturer’s latest smartphone, the Fairphone 4, will have to be patient. The team is currently working to make Android 13 available for this model by the end of 2023.
The possibility of a Google-free version
Unlike other manufacturers, Fairphone kindly offers its users the option to install another operating system – /e/OS, for example, which I have written about here several times, if you are comfortable with Android and not Google.
