Unfortunately, today, April 9, 2024, it was published Peter HiggsThe British scientist who discovered the Higgs boson particle died on April 8 at the age of 94. Because of his age, it is noted that the physicist died peacefully at home after a brief illness.
The news came thanks to a statement shared by the University of Edinburgh, where Higgs worked as a researcher and teacher. Here’s what was said about it:
“It has been confirmed that Professor Peter Higgs has died at the age of 94. He died peacefully at home on Monday 8 April after a short illness. His family said the media and public would respect his privacy at this time.”
Higgs won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013 for his groundbreaking work showing how bosons help hold the universe together.. In the 1960s, Higgs and other physicists worked on a concept to explain why mass is the building block of the universe.
This led to the search for a particle that could explain the forces of electromagnetism as well as the weak and strong nuclear forces in a single theory. In 2012, scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, in Switzerland, They used the Large Hadron Collider and finally discovered it. This particle was called the Higgs boson.
The legacy of Peter Higgs is very important, and will be remembered as one of the most important scientists of the modern era. On a related note, we tell you when the next solar eclipse will be.
Rest in peace, Peter Higgs.
Editor’s note:
The understanding that many have of physics and our world comes from a great mind that, sadly, is no longer with us. However, just as Higgs was inspired by the greatest minds of his youth, it is likely that this physicist’s work will play an important role in the future of more than one person.
