Samsung should finally install a better image sensor again and move away from 200MP.
After Samsung again set 108 MP for the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the jump to 200 MP for the Galaxy S23 Ultra was a surprise, and probably a very good thing. The Galaxy S24 Ultra could not overcome the weakness of high image resolution.
Samsung promises that the new generation is better and above all faster. But the biggest problem is far from solved: the 200 MP image sensor is very slow, especially compared to other smartphone cameras. The camera shutter is very slow, a big disadvantage.
Samsung has carried over its shutter lag issue to the latest generation
If we talk about full sun and optimal lighting conditions, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is definitely well placed. But as soon as more difficult conditions arise, the camera releases too slowly, which spoils many pictures. Especially moving objects are blurred.
In a new video, our colleagues addressed the issue with the latest status They explain “shutter lag”, compare it to the Pixel 8 Pro, and also show a tool from Samsung that can reduce the lag – but at the expense of image quality.
The only solution: go from 200 MP to a maximum of 50 MP, as competitors are doing
With the Galaxy S25 Ultra, Samsung should rather gradually move away from the 200 MP image sensor. Especially because the benefits for the user are actually non-existent. Regardless, I can’t think of anything that was really more practical or better in everyday life.
Apart from the question of cost, what matters is marketing. Of course, 50 MP can no longer be sold based on resolution, so Samsung needs to come up with something to explain why the change is happening, because at first glance it looks like a big step backwards.
