Constantly replacing devices with new models no longer seems right.
This is actually an opportunity for manufacturers like Google to sell older Pixel models in smaller price segments for longer. This is especially clear with a long update guarantee, but the best-selling smartphone from 2022 was not planned.
The Pixel 6a sold very well until early 2023, when it was replaced by the significantly more expensive Pixel 7a. But only now is Google pulling the ripcord and finally throwing the Pixel 6a overboard. At least when it comes to the Google Store and selling models – that’s it.
Google already had a decent update guarantee and sold important replacement parts
Even though it was released in 2022, the Pixel 6a from Google already comes with a pretty decent update guarantee. Not yet at the level of the latest model (7 years!), but according to the support documentation, Android version updates for the Pixel 6a are guaranteed until July 2025.
For Pixel 6a users, this means: Android 15 is definitely still there, and then there will probably be three Pixel feature drops or quarterly updates (December 2024, March and June 2025). I’ll put it this way. If you can find a bargain and get the Pixel 6a for less than 300 euros, you can actually still buy it.
Another positive point is the official range of accessories, which are sold directly through partner iFixit. here Now just battery, display and camera. Proper tools are also provided and instructions are available. Google leads the way for other smartphone OEMs.
In any case, I would support the older models being put on sale for a little while longer in the future and thus giving customers a chance to choose from the “officially” cheaper price categories.
