With Pixel 10, Google will take a very big step in its smartphone history.
A big change will come with the Pixel 9 in 2024, as the Pixel 9 Pro is available in two different versions. A small compact version and an XL version. It’s the first to do so, following Apple’s example, which offers the Pro model in two sizes.
But a much bigger change will come later: with the Pixel 10 in 2025. Because it’s becoming increasingly clear that this will be the first generation with Google’s entirely own custom chip. In this context, they are moving away from Samsung and will no longer rely on Exynos modifications.
Google is doing everything by itself leaving Samsung behind
These rumors have been confirmed in recent weeks. It is now clear from the outside, for example through commercial databases, that Google is currently exchanging prototypes with TSMC This fits with several insider rumors that Google will have a custom CPU from the Tensor G5, which will be manufactured under contract by TSMC.
A significantly larger leap in efficiency and performance is expected over the Pixel 9. However, not all questions are clarified at this point. Google currently uses a Samsung modem for mobile communications, but what will they do in the future? What is certain, however, is that Tensor G5 will be designed more specifically for AI calculations.
A bumpy start is expected, as this will be another big move for Google. We remember the Pixel 6, which had some issues when switching to the first tensor generation.
The impact of Google becoming a one-stop shop for (other manufacturers’) own devices in the Android ecosystem will also be exciting to see. How well is Android maintained so that other manufacturers can benefit from it?
