- Google’s Android app is set to receive Gemini Key.
- The new feature allows Android users to use Gemini without downloading a dedicated Android app.
Updated: April 8, 2024 (3:20 am ET): In our original article below, we assumed that Gemini would serve as an experience within Google apps without completely replacing Assistant on your Android phone. Unfortunately this is not the case. The tipster has now told Android Authority that even if you use the upcoming Gemini switch in the Google app, you’ll be greeted with a page asking for your permission to switch from Assistant to Gemini. If you have previously signed up to use Gemini, you will not see this permission. The kicker is that no matter how you use it on your Android device, Gemini replaces Assistant.
Original article: April 8, 2024 (1:20 am ET): Google launched Gemini, a dedicated Assistant replacement app for Android, in February. However, it looks like the search giant hasn’t “twinned” your Android phone yet. If you haven’t downloaded the Gemini app yet, Google is planning to give the AI chatbot a prominent place within the Google app.
As per travel guidelines Patch-montageResults (approx Bionic Web), Android users will soon see Gemini Key in the Google app on their devices. This is similar to how Google is rolling out Gemini in its iOS app. When you switch to Gemini within the Google app, you can interact with the AI by typing, talking to it, or sharing a photo. So you’re essentially moving from the traditional Google search and discovery interface to the Gemini interface.
The new option in the Google app for Android actually makes sense for users who want to use Gemini but don’t want to miss out on Google Assistant functionality. If you currently download the Gemini app on your Android device, you must remove Google Assistant and only use Gemini as the primary AI guide on your phone. Switching to using Gemini in Google apps gets around this limitation.
There’s no word on when the feature will launch in the Google app for Android, but you can see how it works thanks to the video above shared by the tipster.
