A few months ago, a comment about the premature end of the Google Pixel 4 was very well received. Now the last big update is almost upon us.
Google talks sustainability, as does the entire industry. And yet you don’t do much to ensure that devices from the last few years are equipped with new software for a little longer. Major Android updates are still only available for three years, which was the case today and the Pixel 4 as well.
Google Pixel 4 with Soli hardware is still interesting today
The Pixel 4 update guarantee for Android updates ends next October. Android 13 which has just been released is the last major update for the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. In general, the Pixel 4 generation is a bummer, as Google only offered hardware-supported Face Unlock for a year.
Motion sense was used for gestures, and there was also infrared hardware for face unlock:
Unfortunately, few app developers have addressed the appropriate interfaces to allow apps to be unlocked using the Pixel 4’s Face Unlock hardware. There was hardly any reason for this, as even the Pixel 5, along with Motion Sense and associated hardware, no longer existed.
Google only guarantees security updates for the Pixel 4 for three years
Technically I don’t miss the Pixel 4 much, but visually and haptically. In any case, Android 13 is the last major feature update and security update guarantee is also over. There may be minor final updates after October, this will be normal.
Here’s what Pixel 4 owners can expect in the future: Google doesn’t provide any information on Pixel feature drops. Delivery actually ends with the update guarantee, but it doesn’t have to be etched in stone forever.
