Google is now shipping the Pixel 6a to customers despite having outdated software. An update should be on the way.
Early owners of the Pixel 6a have already noticed that the actually brand new Pixel 6a is equipped with a rather outdated security patch. It’s not just my device that still says April, even though there are already three new security patches. The devices were apparently in stock for a very long time.
The devices had probably been in storage for a long time
In fact, the first devices in their original packaging went on sale about two months ago. Falling from the truck, of course, and not quite official. Still, there were probably already fully packaged devices that were ready for sale. If you include the lead time of manufacturing, packaging and shipping, the software can only be “outdated”.
Google kündigt Day-One-Patch an
The old security patch caused a stir for a short time, but Google is reassuring the public there. Right around the time of the Pixel 6a’s market launch, Google Forums said that a new security patch will be rolled out as the first update for the Pixel 6a. Software version SD2A.220601.003 is expected for the model worldwide, according to the developers.
More next week: The August patch is just days away
So far, Google has only said that the update will be a new security patch. But I expect a bug fix update for Google smartphones in August. Google will likely reveal what’s in there on Monday evening. Some bug fixes are probably still needed for the Pixel 6a. For example, I had some wifi issues.
